Hobart is Australias second oldest city boasting a rich maritime history. The Derwent River
provides Hobart with one of Australias finest naturally occurring deepwater ports and was the
centre of the Southern Ocean whaling and seal trade in the late 1800s. Allied industries such as
shipbuilding saw Hobart grow into a major port.
Exports of the States natural resources such as apples, pears and timber, and processed
materials such as zinc and paper saw sustained growth of Hobarts port facilities long after the
whaling and seal trade ceased to exist.
Hobart was also the central passenger and freight transport hub servicing the South-East of
Tasmania and Hobarts Eastern Shore before major road and bridge infrastructure was developed.
